In context

United States and Turkey have maintained a close relationship, especially in the military, since the end of World War II, and such friendship has led to the installation of US military bases in the Ottoman country.

In 1952 Turkey joined the Organization of the North Atlantic Treaty (NATO) and guaranteed the presence of US troops in the region to threaten the Soviet Union.

An example of such a relationship was in the Cuban missile crisis of October 1962, when the United States threatened to launch missiles from Turkey to the former Soviet Union if Moscow had not finished sending missiles to Cuba.

Turkey supported the US invasions in the Middle East, from Iran in 1953, until the second invasion of Iraq in 2003. It has also endorsed the actions of the State of Israel against the Palestinian people.

Currently, Turkey supports the bombing of the US-led Syria in its supposed fight against the self-styled Islamic State (Daesh in Arabic) coalition and has worked in logistics and training of armed groups who oppose the government of Bashar al-Assad.
