By Liana B. Baker and Malathi Nayak

(Reuters) – Spanish telecoms group Telefonica has expressed interest in acquiring the assets of pay-TV AT & T Inc has in Latin America, which could be valued at around 10,000 million dollars, according to people familiar with the matter.

AT & T received these assets to acquire DirecTV last year. Business services include satellite television and cable in Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina and several other countries.

The US company has yet to decide whether to explore a sale to Telefonica or another company, people familiar with the matter said.

There are others interested in assets of AT & T in specific countries, and the company may choose to conduct various sales processes, one of the sources said, adding that one of the potential buyers could be Liberty Global Plc.

The sources asked not to be identified because the discussions are confidential under development.

Telefonica and AT & T declined to comment. Liberty Global could not be reached.

AT & T has about 19 million subscribers of pay television South and Central America, making it the biggest player in the region. But earnings were pressured by the depreciation of currencies in Brazil and other Latin American countries.

AT & T owns about 93 percent of Sky Brazil, largest satellite TV provider in the largest economy in the region. He also owns Panamericana, which provides television services satellite in the DirecTV brand in countries such as Venezuela, Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Puerto Rico.

It is also shareholder of Sky Mexico, which is controlled by Grupo Televisa.
