I had written here about a year ago, but now the good Eugenio Derbez and confirmed during the presentation of his new (or rather renewed) internet space.
Saturday Night Live would never work in Mexican television. Not for lack of talent. Just look at how busy and successful walking everywhere writers and actors who had chosen for the project these days as to discount that theory. Either by lack of support from Lorne Michaels (the big boss of SNL) and NBC. Since he approved the idea and project to the producer Adriana Bello was much enthusiasm on that side too.
But there were those who never wanted flagship program that saw the light in Mexico. Not all, but many of the top executives of Televisa refused to answer questions about it when it is assumed that the project itself was in the air.
The dates were postponed and seals were eternal. The scripts were there to be adapted and fully writers doing a great job. But what makes a Saturday Night Live the program’s most important comedy American history is ultimately political humor.
Ya wanna see here for a sketch in broadcast television mocking White House or actress imitating Seagull . And Televisa! Never going to happen.
However, if there were a scandal kind in their country of origin and the issue is not touched, would burn Troy and the program would lose all credibility.
Eugenio only said the political mood is absent in the Mexican broadcast television, and rightly so. But with all that is at stake was more cautious these days. He could say more. But the truth is that it was naive to think that this was his platform.
What could it be? Either these days. Universal Channel, for example. Is NBC-Universal after all. But the contents should work for all Latin America and that’s another story. One that I would love to be reckoned. ¿Netflix? It would be amazing but not much affection between studies and traditional media with this sweeping new system of production and distribution.
Internet? ¿YouTube? So many ways that can still be. But it is time to understand that “start from the top” does not necessarily imply broadcast television these days. Too many limitations. It was not wanting Derbez presented its platform in the network at the height of their success.
