New TV stations in Mexico, what viewers what? – CNNExpansión.com

MEXICO CITY (CNNExpansión) – The entry of Grupo Radio Centro (owner of radio stations Alfa, Universal and La Z) and Three Chain (owner of Channel 28 and media such as Excelsior and Excelsior TV) newspaper to provide broadcast TV services mean more competition for Televisa and TV Azteca.

Currently, the station of San Ángel brings 56% of broadcast television concessions and 68% of ad spending by advertisers, while the company has 39% of Ajusco concessions and 31% of advertising revenue. The rest is in the hands of smaller, according to data from the Federal Institute of Technology (IFT) chains.

But what means the entry of these new two strings to the consumer? What if the viewer does not have a digital TV? Will there be more content offerings? Respond specialists.

Who can receive the signal?

Three signals and Grupo Radio Centro Chain will be digital, so analog televisions can not grasp signals directly play the new digital terrestrial television (DTT).

As of January 1, 2016, to receive broadcast television signal, users must have a digital TV or set-top box. Of the 31 million households in Mexico, 15.3 million (49.2%) depend on the analog broadcast television, according to official data and the Latin American Multichannel Advertising Council (LAMAC).

To support families in need, since 2013, the federal government has begun with the migration to the new standard with the delivery of antennas and decoders, but in 2014 it was decided that TV only be delivered.

The Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (SCT) plans to deliver 13.8 million digital televisions across the country. The beneficiaries have received since 2014 a team of 22 inches. That means nearly 2 million homes will have to migrate to this technology alone.

How much migrate?

Data SCT, based on an analysis prepared by PROFECO indicate that the average cost of a TV 22 inches was 3,741 pesos in 2013 or 6000 pesos for 32 inches. The cheapest decoder was around 600 pesos and 200 pesos cheaper other antenna.

There will be more content?

The transition to DTT allow you to receive television signals with higher quality picture and sound, as well as transmit several programs TV simultaneously on the same channel (which is known as multiprogramming), expanding the possibilities of access to content for viewers.

“That means there will be channel 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 or 3.4″ exemplified Jorge Fernando Negrete, director of Mediatelecom Policy & amp; Law.

The companies are not required to use the spectrum available to put more content, could even replicate the contents of the main channel in the channels. However, it is anticipated that do use that spectrum, it leased to independent producers or to provide content of international production.

“No use represent idle capacity, while seize could generate them revenue advertisers,” said Ramiro Tovar, specialist competence of the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM).

Will highest quality content?

Having a greater number of content does not necessarily mean higher quality, said Fernando Negrete, of Mediatelecom.

It is contemplated that companies begin broadcasting in late 2015 or early 2016 with content purchased from international producers, while developing own content, said Ernesto Piedras, director of the consulting The CIU.

“To win market, new companies will have to take a different Televisa and TV Azteca offer. I’m not saying they have to be cultural content, but different as series or BBC content. At the beginning of transmissions would be the most viable purchase content from international producers and series, as they begin to own productions “.
