“Spain is so different that we have invented pay-TV … – eldiario.es

Joseba Fiestras attends the ediarionorte.es in a pause between the preparations for the sixth FesTVal held in Vitoria 1 to 6 September. The director of Vitoria Television Festival has experienced firsthand the changes that have affected the cinema in recent years. Since the advent of DTT, the disappearance of several channels or the emergence of social networks have changed the way we consume television, a medium that struggles to adapt to changing times. Stock class=”mce” />

The FesTVal is now 6 years on a window that claims the audiovisual medium as part of the culture. You are a defender of television why you think that TV is culture

Because it is a medium in which there are many windows that offer plenty of different things: from documentaries, entertainment, cultural programs … I do not understand why people do not doubt that the film is culture and why a number is not culture. We are talking the same language practically. And entertainment is also culture. I’m not saying that everything is done in television culture, but generally as a means culture itself is, I believe

But the reality is that TV is much criticized as a means beloved, and usually the most criticized products are those that have more audience. Why criticize what we really consume

The people in general are very hypocritical, also in film and literature. The best literature is the most read ?, probably not. Film critics rarely agree with the audience. I admit that many times I know what I’m seeing is not a good program, but I’m tired of working and I do not think, and I always have the ability to change channels

Social networks have become a means of dissemination of some programs, and critical, sometimes fierce. How do you think the return of audience opinion is managed

The ‘feedback’ that caused the networks is easier and more immediate, that is the drastic change, and this is what has led the way to change TV. I think in the future that may change their content based on what the reviews say on Twitter and social networks. And I’m not so sure that’s good, because I think that when you do a TV show have to be clear where you want to go, who want to go and how you want to. Like I’m wrong and next year we are talking about and most successful program is one that follows the dictates of what they say on Twitter, but I think it would be an exception.

I think what you are doing social networking is changing the way of doing television, which of course has to mold to the new technologies, but not only by critics but by the way you see the viewer.

What they are doing social networking is change the way of doing television, which of course has to mold to the new technologies, but not just for criticism but the way the viewer to see

Here is the young audience that has changed their way of consuming television. Think fleeing traditional TV

I do not think to run, has found another way to watch TV. For the kids still like them the videotape, but want another language, do not want to waste time, they want to tell us what they told us in a series of one hour, they ask in five minutes. The reality is that now the kids of 15 or 20 years does not watch TV on TV, they see the tablet, mobile, what is known is another language, appears to be the same screen, but it’s another language they’re used to in a video a minute or 30 seconds you condenses them everything they want to see, because they see the bus stop. And that is creating a new language such as ‘web series’. In this sense I do think that televisions are turning to throw out there and find the formula to reach that audience

The big problem is that nobody knows how to make it profitable. Internet advertising is the kids jump, and brands that are aware. They are used to seeing series absolutely no advertising, because it down directly from the Internet, and no one has found a way to make it profitable

On the other hand, the television landscape has changed in the last year with the disappearance of nine channels of DTT, and the concentration of media channels into three groups. Do you think that has ordered the Spanish television landscape

I think things got really bad. We are born in 2009 when television is still analog. Between the first and second television festival longer and becomes analog and digital channels multiply. When I talked to many TV people commented to me that Spain is so different that we invented free pay TV. And it is because in all countries where it is digitized TV, follow the same general channels and the rest are pay channels in most specialized. Not here, DTT and goes out all the free channels, including Disney. I think we are the only country in the world where Disney channel for free because he had to give up

Then they realized they had done wrong, there was a reorganization and a short time had to close several channels which are already made an investment, where a number of people work yse have lost a number job, but it must be done. Now we prepared another guillotine and just fall more channels, but otherwise warn that just open more channels and just now I are extra. To me they have made a mistake because in Spain we are very particular, if you are accustomed to free is very difficult to change

Let’s talk FesTVal do you think the TV needs a showcase like this festival to reach the younger audience and

Yes, because we have an advantage that has no TV, they can see the stars in the flesh. The third year we premieres of international series, and although they were very straight series did not work. Spanish series with the added attraction that exists can see the stars, touch them, take a picture with them. Our audience is youthful carpet and more feminine than masculine, because the fan phenomenon has that profile

Why not bring this year Mediaset FesTVal premieres to having been a chain linked to the festival, there has been a problem?

Our relationship with Mediaset remains fantastic. Yes it has distressed us that decision, but called us and said they had a difficult summer with different activities and would not duplicate, it was a purely strategic and business decision. No problem for either party, it is your decision and I have to abide by it and respect it, especially for a reason and I know there are journalists who will try to get controversial, but not any-: so far as Mediaset all he has done is lean when it was his right to do so and in the most difficult years of the festival have been there, and I can only thank him. Now they have decided not to be, for whatever reason, and it seems perfectly respectable. We will try to return next year

Six editions since, and growing every year: what is the key to successful FesTVal

I think the key is that there is nothing like it. But really the key to success not know anyone of anything, you can have it all tied up and suddenly does not work. We did not expect it would arrive so fast we have come, I think it is key is not to rest on your laurels

The big bet this year is the ProFesTVal, and had done the professional conferences and what we have in this issue is to group, give strength and put their own name, and the idea is to continue to grow and go in parallel to FesTVal. The next challenges are to open space, trying to find something different each year, knowing that the most attractive is the orange carpet and the arrival of the players, but we try to keep growing.
