This system became popular from 2000; and now anyone with a computer, an internet-connected TV, tablet or smartphone, that has a broadband contract, you can see your favorite via streaming audiovisual products. The success of this way of watching TV is such that a recent study conducted by Ericsson Consumer Lab confirms that they are almost as many people who use the streaming like watching conventional television worldwide. The stated conclusion is the result of a survey of more than 23,000 people from 23 countries who were interviewed online.

The report finds that 75% of viewers watch streaming content several times a week, compared to 77% who view television programs broadcast in conventional chains. According to this report, 19% of the viewers also accept pay for access to your favorite content from any device, representing an increase of 25% compared to what was stated two years ago. The report reveals that increased time spent watching content on smartphones and tablets, while packets of pay television traditional chains are perceived by many users as content platforms that allow the user to select fragments for viewing when you want, using digital video recorders.

For Ericsson, the recording function is also helping to fuel the trend of binge TV, which began with the arrival of the television series and movie sagas packed and contrasts with the traditional experience of waiting a week to see each new episode. Specifically, 56% of those who pay to subscribe to a video service on demand rather have all the episodes of a TV series once available, compared to 45% who do not pay a service on demand. Also, many viewers have chosen to subscribe to video services on demand, like Netflix or Hulu, and 48% say they would like to have all episodes of series to choose when to see them together. There are also illegal streaming, as the case of Megaupload, a website that was shut down by the FBI in 2012 to disseminate audiovisual content bootleg.

As for quality, the study reveals that 43% of respondents attached importance to the Ultra High Definition, which is already possible with broadband internet. For senior adviser Ericsson ConsumerLab Rönnblom Heyman, media companies need to rethink how to create and bring to market content.
