Macri Telesur expels the Open Digital Television – Telesur TV

On Monday June 7, the Argentine government notified Telesur that “proceed to stop emitting the signal within 15 days”. The terse letter in which it informs the channel’s decision was released Tuesday 8 the president of the multi-state television station, Patricia Villegas, through social networks.

“As we think about progress and grow, to add and multiply, never subtract or divide, the government intends @mauriciomacri us disappear. Just commemoration dates and fight for l @ s journalists in Argentina, comes this notice. # NoNosCallarán # teleSURConArgentina “published the president of Telesur, Patricia Villegas, in his Facebook account.

The decision is “based on needs to renew the grid of our Experimental System of Digital Television Terrestrial and satellite TV system,” the letter sent by Correo Argentino and signed by María Eugenia Martínez, manager of Legal Affairs of Radio and Television State Society Argentina (RTA SE). This is the only explanation before moving on to “convey the gratitude of RTA SE for the important contribution made (by Telesur) to both systems and state that this termination does not preclude the conclusion of other future agreements.”

From the “plurality of voices” to war against journalism

The Argentine government has long aimed at reducing the arrival of the channel to the population Argentina. A few months ago -the company allowed Cablevisión group Clarin monopoly position in the sector- take out the signal from your basic package. And in late March, after the visit of Barack Obama to Argentina, informed through the media and social networks, rather than the own channel concerned that the Argentine government would withdraw from the multi-state company in charge of the television until that moment shared with Venezuela, Cuba, Ecuador, Bolivia, Nicaragua and Uruguay. This decision was condemned by organizations and social referents, who accused Macri of censoring the channel.

Ironically, the notification was sent the day in Argentina Journalist’s Day is celebrated. On 7 June (1810) is the founding date of the Gazeta de Buenos Ayres, by Mariano Moreno, Patriot anti-colonial epic of the early nineteenth century. At that time, Moreno urged the media to face the battle of ideas against the royalist forces, trying to position another speech and another view of the world.

Two centuries later, in Argentina and throughout Latin America there are many media but little breadth of looks: Telesur along with RT in Spanish, which is also emitted by openly Digital Television is one of the few signs that express a critical view of neoliberalism and US domination over most countries of the continent.

“Macri claims that all voices say the same. He does not want any cracks in the chorus of domesticated means associated therewith, deliberately concealing the effects of neoliberal adjustment plan and layoffs promoted by the government, “said Manuel Bertoldi concerning Grande Nation and member of the operational secretariat of ALBA movements, who also recalled that the Argentine government allows Canal 13 television station Clarin group -the interfering signals Barricada community media as TV and City TV. “Thus, the plurality of information campaign Macri becomes more concentration, more power handling, less right to information for the people”.

“Censorship Telesur also has a geopolitical significance,” adds Bertoldi. “Telesur is the channel of Latin American peoples. In just over a decade it has democratized access to information, telling the stories of the peoples of America. Macri does not want to be seen by Telesur Argentines and Argentine because it is the only one that shows the alignment of his government with the United States, which has as one of its employees to re-colonize the continent. ”
