Zapping media: The Teddy to the virtual reality, the … – The Voice of Interior

In 1983, when the colour took over the obsolete transmissions in black-and-white, the argentine television was transformed completely. It was more than a play aesthetic or an industrial break-through; color signified a radical change in the way in which television is perceived. It happened a lot, and not so much time to time, and in these little over 30 years ago the technology was always the one that took the pulse of the changes: flat-screen tvs, the remote control (brought in from the hand to the zapping), plasma, led and now the HD and the 4K. But all revolving more or less around the same narrative form. There were jumps, it is true, the realities or the sitcom are examples of new formats, but the audiovisual experience has remained with the viewer always in front of the screen.

In Argentina there were however, some attempts to revolutionize the television; in 1992, Channel Thirteen has launched with much fanfare their 3D content. It was a few shorts that looked with glasses of cardboard that is the same channel gave out and they promised to make images out of the tv. None of that happened and the experience was more closely tied to the question of effects of cameras that in the three dimensions.

A couple of years later, ATC (public television) under the intervention of Gerardo Sofovich brought to sale at the Teddy bear Teddy, a stuffed toy fortune promised to interact with the children in the house during the programming of the channel. But when the parents who were able to pay 12 installments of u$ s 12,90, big business had already come out of the screen leaving just a few words in "gallego" cuddly doll.

beyond these missteps, some time ago that the television is trying to integrate the various digital platforms and increase the user experience. Today there will be a new test. This Thursday the 23, the signal SyFy will air Halcyon, the first in a series that promises to use the virtual reality for the viewers to follow the story.

With a plot police classic, what’s interesting is that Halcyon is a television project that appeals to the virtual reality in the first person so that it is the viewer who, through the special lenses of the Samsung Galaxy s7 or the device Oculus Rift, need to clarify the case in question. Regardless of what is broadcast by tv, in this series it will be necessary to resort to the device of virtual reality to understand what is happening, something that in the end will be a move of the bet.

Today will start to be written a new history in television, but it is too early to know if we are facing the beginning of a new era in which virtual reality is set as a new narrative or if, as happened in the literature, will be an interesting experience in the style of “Choose your own adventure”.
