Reader Question: How do we find a healthy balance for our teens watch movies, TV shows and listen to music chords in time and at the same time to develop capacity for discernment
Jim Personally, I think it’s a good idea to avoid extremes.
Some parents choose to impose restrictions: no movies, no TV. Point. This approach can simplify your search for decisions about entertainment, but is also capable of generating the rebellion.
Other parents go to the opposite extreme: everything is fine, do whatever they want. But this permissive approach also has major drawbacks.
I urge you to seek a compromise, agreeing to shared moral values and then work with their children to establish healthy boundaries. It’s basically a matter of deciding how much to protect adolescents and entertainment questionable how much would like to discuss with them the programs they watch.
Try to achieve a happy medium between the two. Put your ideas on paper and develop a “family entertainment constitution.”
When possible, include suggestions of the children, as this will ensure how they affect the parameters. Once the document is completed, paste it on the refrigerator door.
