Letterman, the last of a generation – The Universal

An era of late night television in the United States say goodbye on Wednesday with the bridal David Letterman , the dean of “late-night shows” and a legend of the small screen.

Letterman will end 33 years of front-first of such programs on NBC and CBS from 1993 on and with it the last of a generation of comedians who created school will go.

Punk, irreverent and, as his career progressed, increasingly ironic and cantankerous, the presenter will be remembered as one of the great innovators of the genre and at the same time as one of the most successful communicators in recent decades .

In his farewell, the renewal of US grill night, and faces dominated by much younger as Conan O’Brien , Jimmy Kimmel or brand will be completed Jimmy Fallon , who drives “The Tonight Show” on NBC.

The space was precisely the unattainable dream of Letterman, who began his career in television in the chain and which sought to replace the legendary Johnny Carson .

However, when retired, NBC was the surprise and chose to give the baton to Jay Leno , pushing Letterman to CBS, which did not move for 22 years.

At that time, with a daily program, the presenter has had plenty of time to leave hundreds of memorable moments, from the thug humor of his beginnings to his heartfelt speech after the attacks of September 11th, when it was the first comic to return to the airwaves .

Letterman, of course, has also experienced difficult times, such as when he admitted in antenna having sex with an assistant and other subordinate to avoid an attempt at blackmail by one.

The comic then said he had made “horrible things” and became the target of much criticism, which however did not prevent him to continue with its program for years.

Nor he could with him open heart surgery in 2000, forcing him to go for a month away from the TV, but which returned with a vengeance.

“It was fantastic because everything was about me. (…) People came and cared for me and helped me get out of bed and walk around the hospital wing. And then when I came out … came home and was wonderful, “she recalled today in an interview with his characteristic sense of humor.

For Letterman, much more than that quintuple bypass, now comes the really scary when at age 68 will end a life devoted to television.

“I feel naked and scared,” he admitted today on the withdrawal, after which not even quite sure what will. “I doubt anyone will see me again,” he joked.

In recent weeks, Letterman, which will be replaced by Stephen Colbert has already anticipating the end of his program with several special interviews with, among others, former President Bill Clinton, Julia Roberts, George Clooney and Oprah Winfrey.

On Monday, the character is the actor Tom Hanks and musical performance will be borne by Eddie Vedder, leader of Pearl Jam, while on Tuesday the presenter closes the circle with an interview that was first built 33 years ago: comedian Bill Murray, who will make his 44th appearance in the program.

That day, after two decades of absence, the music will be a matter of Bob Dylan , pending a final episode on Wednesday which have not given details.

Among the highlights rumors of a possible appearance of Jay Leno, who was first his apprentice and then his great rival, who survived on screens Letterman, and put a happy end classic race of every American icon.
