It is not often that the Cuban media – all under control of the state report on meetings between the two.
The Cuban general Raul Castro said on Monday a meeting with Cardinal Jaime Ortega to discuss preparations for the Pope’s visit to Cuba in September Francisco, the evening news reported.
“Army General Raul Castro Ruz (…) received in the afternoon of Monday August 17 Cardinal Jaime Ortega, Archbishop of Havana. During the cordial meeting, they talked about the progress of preparations for the visit to Cuba of His Holiness Pope Francisco, “said the news.
Castro and Ortega also spoke” on issues of mutual interest in relations between the Cuban state and the Catholic Church in Cuba, “he said news.
At the meeting were also present Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez and Eusebio Leal, Historian of the City of Havana.
The Catholic hierarchy is now the only party of the Cuban regime the island, after being surpassed in 1998 with the visit of John Paul II tensions between the Church and the State.
Although the ruling Communist Catholic cardinal and maintain fluid communication channels from five years ago, that allowed the release of about 130 political prisoners in 2010 and 2011, it is not uncommon for Cuban-all under control of the state media to report on meetings between them.
The Pope Francisco, who brokered talks secrets that led to the United States and Cuba to announce last December to half a century of enmity, will visit both countries in September.
