SEOUL (Reuters) – the Indian subsidiary of the South Korean company LG Electronics has begun to market a television that says that repels mosquitoes that can spread diseases such as malaria, zika or dengue.
the TV uses ultrasonic waves that are inaudible to humans, but causes mosquitoes to leave, according to the company. LG said the markets in the country since Thursday.
The same technology, which is certified as effective by an independent laboratory near Chennai, India, has been used by air conditioners and washing machines from LG, the company said.
the technology, which also works when the TV is turned off, is available in two models, priced between 26,500 and 47,500 rupees (350-627 euros).
The device is aimed at customers with low income living in conditions that make them vulnerable to mosquitoes.
the company said will launch the product next month in the Philippines and Sri Lanka. Kim Sang-yeol, an official of LG, he said there are no plans to market it in more places at the moment.
the company began developing the device before the outbreak of Zika virus in Latin America that has raised concerns about security at the Olympic Games that begin in Rio de Janeiro in August.
LG said on its website that television is not designed to replace other repellent devices mosquitos.
