The energy balance , that delicate balance that ultimately ends up conditioning, if not determine, our status weight is influenced of multiple elements: genetic, social and environmental . One of those factors related to the environment and our behavior seems to be the form and manner in which we take the time of meal , what we do, who we do and how we do it. All elements that are particularly influential in the case of the smallest , our children.
So for eating while watching television or not can affect your intake, both in quantity and quality . This seems to be such that watch TV while eating increases the risk of obesity among children and adolescents. In this study with a sample of nearly 5,000 young Americans showed that watch TV while eating family was associated with a poorer diet quality among these adolescents. It is not only what is done and how it makes mealtime, the total hours that younger children watch TV or the rest of “screens” (consoles, phones, tablets …) either in food or out of it, also appears to be related to dietary quality . This review of the scientific literature in this regard concludes that there are different studies that have documented a association between the number of hours of television and the prevalence and incidence of obesity . That is, the combination of all those factors related to lifestyle that often accompany television intensive place these children at greater risk of obesity and, of course, poor nutrition.
Having said that, there are also some articles dissonant with this perspective. For example, this study not found greater variation dietary ate what and how a group of teenagers who ate family in relation to TV viewing or not. According to this study, the benefits of eating family may be due to the simple fact of having teenage children at home during meal times.
Anyway, in my house eats no tv . I said that we are fortunate to be able to organize to eat every day with our kids (5 and 9). eat in kitchen , either day or holiday work and although we TV outlet in the kitchen we have set (who avoids the occasion, avoids the danger) and only ate two days a week (Friday and Saturday) in front of the TV, in the living room, usually with a contest to use or some movie. Call me weird but I have always considered eat and watch TV are incompatible activities , if you eat you eat and if you see the TV … for that. Something like driving and reading , it is clear that if we can be done, but assuming certain dangers.
As
concludes the first study I mentioned , health professionals should work with families to promote emphatically that meals remain the TV off .
