Spacey helps make history with "House of Cards" - The Miami Herald

class=”dateline”> LOS ANGELES – A Kevin Spacey loves being part of what he calls “a new paradigm” internet television so compelling and well produced as any TV show.

Thursday Spacey was nominated for an Emmy Award for his performance in “House of Cards,” Netflix original series which got nine nominations in total.

“I’m so happy for the show and so happy for Netflix … it is a great recognition and quality show,” said Spacey, who is also the show’s executive producer. “For us to have obtained … nine nominations, for what it really is, in many ways, a new paradigm, it is very exciting.”

Web TV is a new frontier with new rules. For example, Netflix did not require “House of Cards” will begin with a pilot to submit to the main characters and narrative threads of the story, which gave the writers the freedom to create a natural evolutionary suspense.

“Change the creative process of how to write a series,” said Spacey, 53. “When we commissioned 26 episodes – or chapters, as we like to call them – was remarkable for us because it meant we could just get down to work and tell the story”.

how the program has distributed – the 13 episodes available at once – also gives the public more options as to how to consume.

Such flexibility

attracts creative writers, film directors and actors, as Spacey, the world of television.

“For those who want to tell stories driven by characters rather than explosions … To me it makes sense that the best writers and directors and actors and storytellers will soil that is fertile,” he said. “Now it is very fertile, obviously. The business of ‘streaming’ is fertile, and the television business is in its usual state.”
