Sued TV show Saturday Night Live in Korea ... - Global Voices in Spanish

There’s nothing funny about the difficult legal path awaits political satire South Korea.

conservative pundit who was lampooned in the program has filed a lawsuit against the sitcom version of the United States of South Korea. Saturday Night Live (SNL) Korea [in] was attacked by conservative pundit and media critic Byun Hee-jae (@ pyein2 [ko]) relative to the last issue in its segment Weekend Update [en], a fake program news full of witty comments.

segment driver called him “someone who seeks attention and although is said to have a job, we have no idea what really makes” and nominated him as the “Spooky of the Week”.

Byun, who stands out [in] to attack prominent liberals calling them “pro-North”, which implies that they are sympathetic to North Korea, announced via Twitter [ko] on May 6, 2013 which will require the program defamation. Byun then expanded his attack [ko] and stated that the program distributed what he defined as “illicit news” that “manipulate public opinion” supporting liberal goals:

@ pyein2: TVN SNL ??? ?? ?? ?? ?? ???. ??? ? ??? ?? ? ??? ?? ?? [...] ?? ?? ??? ? ??? ???. ?? ? ?? ?? ??.

@ pyein2: After downloading [and watch several episodes of] SNL Korea aired on [cable channel] tvN, I found the much bigger problem than I thought. Choi Il-gu [who hosts Weekend Update section] mocked the issue [of the election campaign espionage agency] of the NIS and exaggerated [...] and manipulated public opinion program. This bad behavior should be corrected.

Byun

segment reaction was ridiculed on the web. Some users reported that this type of attack on political satires are very frequent and reminded people [ko] the poor performance that had the nation on the press freedom index.

According to the Press Freedom Index by Freedom House, Korea, from 127 countries, was ranked 68 in 2012 [in] and 64 in 2013 [in]:

**** jiso ID: ??? ?? ?? ? 60 ? ?? ???? ?? ?? ??? ?? ?? ? ?? ?? ???? ?? ?? ? ?? ??.

jiso ID ****: This is just what press freedom in South Korea is ranked sixties. We are lower than some developing countries of Africa. [* Note: The phrase "Africa" ??is used to refer to some countries that seemed very remote and unknown] This explains our position in the table.

K-pop website Decoder explained [in] how SNL Korea rose to fame so quickly. Since airing on a cable channel, which is less tied to the strict rules imposed on network television, SNL Korea may test a daring political satire and sexual jokes bolder.

Yeontaek businessman Chang (@ jaykaz [in]) Byun accused and people like him to harm the development of a sense of political mood of the country:

@ jaykaz: SNL Korea ? ?? ? ??? ?? ??. ??? ??? ?? ???? ??, ? ?? ? ??? ??? ? ??. ??? ?? ?? ? ??? ? ?? ?? ? ?? ???. ?? ??? ??? ???? ?? ?? ??? ? ?? ?? ??? ??.

@ jaykaz: SNL Korea must be elated. Although I tried a lot of catch me wrong, I can not even perceive it as “problematic”. If you really wanted to sue Byun, should have done when the program is launched into the air. These kinds of “nobody” [referring to 'a person of no importance or authority' and also Byun nickname given by his critics] have seriously stunted the growth of our nation’s political satire.

Jin Joong-kwon (@ unheim [ko]), a prominent and controversial cultural critic, tweeted [ko]:

@ unheim: ?? ?? “‘SNL ???’ ? ?? ? ?? ?? ? ???? ??. ?? ? ??? ? ?. “?? ?? ?? ??? ?? ?? ?? ?? ??,” ?? ? ?? ?, ?? ? ??. “

@ unheim: SNL’s official response saying “Satire is one of the main elements of SNL Korea. Only the audience to decide. “If I translate this to colloquial language,” Your dog barks all you want. But the train will continue [in programming] – no matter what. “

Jin

later added [ko] can not wait to see the next week’s episode as Byun has voluntarily become a great source for political sketch.

Meanwhile, Twitter user @ sungjinyang Korean [ko] linked a Quora post [in] which explains why the original SNL is rarely sued for defamation – Cliff Gilley [in] replied, “For what SNL makes is considered ‘parody’ “is given” one of the highest levels of protection “and the SNL skit will not be considered defamation because they are not” an express statement declaring as fact. “

However, this simple reasoning does not apply in South Korea. Many months earlier, on January 31, 2013, the Communications Standards Commission Korea rebuked [ko] the sketch comedy program Gag Concert [in] wide popularity in the nation, not to use honorific terms and use insolent tone, referring to the current president of the nation, violating decency on television. One of the reactions on the web says:

@ sigolnonbu: [...] ?? ? ?? ? ?? ?? ?? ? ?? ? ? ??? ? ?? ? ? ??? ?? ?? ? ?? ?. ?? ?? ?? ???. http://j.mp/YhK7mo

@ sigolnonbu: They forgot that the essence of comedy is satire and comedy reprimanded about something so insignificant-his tone. This is so ridiculous and pathetic. (Link to the relevant article [ko])

SNL

Korea staff said [ko] that after experiencing the threat of Byun, now feel even more grateful to all the other presidential candidates who have satirized in his sketches for not taking his jokes so seriously.
